I've had this situation for a while, but I've been in denial. It might be serious, but I'm not sure.
About 9 out of 10 times when I start the car (cold or hot) I hear a loud single clunk when I engage the starter. It's pretty loud, but it's only one clunk and the car starts up Immediately every time. It doesn't make any noise like this while driving, but I do hear clunking noises when I shift gears, which I don't think is related because I've been told the ZF6 is a noisey trans. The shifting noises aren't as loud as the start-clunk.
Bad U-joint came to mind about the clunking while shifting, is that a possibility? If it is a bad U I know that the start-clunk isn't related to that then.
I replaced a starter this week that had the same problem. The bolts that hold the starter housing together came loose and was causing the starter housing pieces to flex and move. The result was that it cracked the nose portion of the starter housing as a result of the flexing.
