[Paint question] Rain on a brand new paint job?
Is it ok for a brand new paint job to get rained on? The car got painted on friday and today's monday. It's been sitting inside the shop all weekend. Would it be ok to take it out in the rain right now, or would that do damage to the fresh coat of paint. (I don't wanna get it dirty or water spotted AT ALL)

Paints now dry with a chemical reaction not evaporation. The paint would be dry by now but if you have the option to leave it inside for a while I would do that.

I wouldn't worry about just driving it home.. I would just wash it off and then put it away.. the new paint is soft so just a little extra care to keep it clean will prevent any damage...

That's just it, I can't "put it away" as I have no garage. The only thing I have is a car cover.

Do not put the cover on it...just leave it out...If it rains just hose it off to get the acid rain off it and any bird dropings. Do not park it under any trees either.

Well, the rains cleared up...and I MAY be able to park my vette at my cousin's house, until the rain ceases. I'm DEFINATELY going to wash it at his house, so I can polish it in the garage. (might even wash it in there too!) haha

You may want to wait to polish or wax it. Most body shops recommend waiting 2-4 weeks before applying any wax/polish. The time frame really depends on the paint they used and the weather. When I had mine done I waited 1-2 weeks, because the car was in AZ in 80-90 degree dry weather that helped cure the paint fast.

What kind and brand paint was it? Most modern paints get very hard in 24 hours. If it is lacquer or acrylic enamel, it will take some time. But urethane paints take 24 hours to get completely cured.Aircraft are painted in urethane and sometimes return to service on the day after a paint job. I am sure that it will be just fine. What did your painter say?

After a few days you can put the car back into service. It all depends upon what materials they used but you are hard pressed to find a paint that isn't very well set up in 2 days anymore. Heck with Dupont Snap Clear you can lay decals in 24 hours without force drying it.....something like 2 hours if you hit it with heat lol.

I just picked up my MX5 from the paint shop, and the guy there said that it would be absolutely fine I drive home in the pouring rain as I mentioned I live in England where it rains 363 days a yearIn all seriousness though I just picked up my MX5 from the paint shop, and the guy there said that it would be absolutely fine I drive home in the pouring rain as I mentioned I live in England where it rains 363 days a year! All the best I know this thread is really old but if anybody actually reads it and is going to get their car painted then I would say ask the person who paints it and react accordingly. Don't necessarily trust the information you read on forums as some people! Don't necessarily trust the information you read on forums as some people can be a bit stupid see my previous post. I do love corvettes by the way I would love to have a big V8 in my MX5 and have about 800 BHP to play with. Twin turbos wouldn't go amiss either ramp it up to 1000 BHP and really go for it!
