Make sure nothing is obstructing the holes and try some dialectric greese.

I don't think that is it. I just can not get enough pressure on the little cord to plug it in and the way I tried to do it what with string and then pull o0n the string while pushing down on the switch but the string would break after so much pressure.

What you're trying is a little unconventional, but try a piece of wire and try not to break anything. I'd just take the console apart to do it right, ya might create more problems.

Let's see...The console's bezel is what the switch fastens to. IIRC, the problem is you can't get (or have a hard time) unplugging everything to lift the bezel high enough for access. Is that it?
Did you know the whole console comes loose by accessing a couple of bolts down thru the "glove box"?
Or, you could remove one of the seats and a side panel. (Might also be necessary for console removal...I can't quite remember w/o checking my FSM.
When I installed a new sw in my '88 I was able to get the socket worked up through the hole; yes it was a very tight fit and took some "wiggling". Again care is needed to not break any of the plastic.
