Default Spring rates

I have a 96 LT4 conv. with the base FE1 suspension. The front leaf spring is cracked. I was considering upgrading to the Z51 springs. Does anyone know the difference in the spring rates or are they the same? Thanks

I found my answer. They are the same. The stabilizer bars and the shocks are different.

Your info source is wrong. Z51 springs are stiffer than the base springs. How much stiffer depends on year. '89-'90 & '91 Z07 front springs are the stiffest relative to the later year (88 & up) C4s.

Here you go:

What do you do with the car? What will determine if it is worth getting the stiffer springs.

Per the link given by 93Rubie the rates are the same for the front spring at 73.2 for FE1 conv. and Z51. What numbers do you show?

Going from memory, they are both 60. I'm looking through my C4 parts manual and there are different p/n's for the coupe and the convertible. Looks like the convertible uses the same spring as the 1995 base car (p/n 17999031, spring code FSR). The '96 Z51 p/n is 17999032. No spring code is provided.

So in fact, I may be incorrect and by virtue of it using the '95 base spring, you have the equivalent of the '96 Z51 spring (p/n difference aside). FWIW, The '96 Z51 coupe was essentially the '95 base suspension. Just goes to show how soft the car got.

Your rear spring is actually stiffer than the Z51 spring. However, it has a bigger 26mm front sway bar. That and it has the HD lower control arm bushing (have a higher twist rate) and a square 275/40/17 setup. This last piece is the one that makes C4's handle. The 255/285 setup was for steering feel for the country club set.

Unless you plan making other changes I would NOT change the front spring rate. The 73.2 is very common and should be easy to find.

I got to say, Ive driven a 96 F45 (Wathen1955) and the Vette feels like a sedan. It is very comfortable.
