Urgh, I was driving some what competitvly, anyways, at the end of 3rd(I didn't redline it, I pulled out of 3rd around 76ish) I thought I put it in 4th
Being in a competitive mood, and not wanting to waste time, I let out clutch,
SHREEK, FISHTAIL, IMMEDIATELY CLUTCH IS BACK IN.
NOPE I PUT IT IN 2nd ACCIDENTLY!
The clutch was out, and the car was in 2nd for like 1 second or less.
After wards, I noticed no problems, ran fine as usual.
Could I have hurt something, Pushrods? :bb :bb :bb
You may have gotten "luckey" and the clutch slipped enough to sa ve the motor.
Over reving a stock L98 usually floats the valves. If no valve or piston damage the valves springs still heat up fast. When this happens they lose temper and the real red-line becomes lower, as the valve springs will then fail at lower RPM.
Like I said you may have been luckey and not had it up there long enough to heat up the valve springs to do any damage to them.
This happened to me recently. I was going for 5th at the end of 4th, and got 3rd....at 125 MPH. I can't remember the exact RPM but I think it calculated out to 7300 RPM, or something like that. It was only a second before I put the clutch in, the engine roared, and sounded like a lot of air rushing.
Everybody will probably tell you to rebuild your engine, take apart, you over-stressed something, its going to fail on you when you are in bumf Idaho. I don't believe you damaged anything. If you did, you would have been stranded on that road, hear a knocking or something right away. Something wouldn't be right. And you didn't mention any weird noises, etc. associated with it.
(I should mention the engine roared real loud when I put into 3rd, not after I put the clutch back in). Everything has been fine 3 drag strip runs, and numerous tire smoking street experiences later. It'll be fine
Is this a good case for using something like an MSD 6AL or equivalent? The soft touch rev feature sounds appealing...anyone using it with an opinion?
Ignition cutoff cannot prevent an over-rev from a bad shift. It just keeps you from popping it by holding the loud pedal down too long. If you put a 3.45 6spd car in 3rd instead of 5th at the top of 4th (132 MPHish) your engines going to hit 8000 RPM no matter what kind of rev limiter you have (unless its the rod-let-go limiter)
Re: Over reving :( Hurt anything? (silver & red CE)
Ship your car to me and I will diagnose it for a year!

Realistically, you are one very lucky guy... You could have done major engine or drivetrain damage. If the revs are high enough, things could grenade.
:nono:
I missed a shift once, from 2nd to 3rd ( went to neutral by mistake, TH350 auto ) at 6800 RPM, motor went to at least 9000 RPM ( judging by the sound of it ). It scared the heck out of me...but the motor ran for about 6 years past that until a rod broke. I'm sure that incident was responsible for the rod breakage. Oh, I did replace a lot of power steering pumps in that car as well as alternators and transmissions. :D
you will be fine as long as nothing has changed in the sound and power curve your car made previously.. you possibly may have shortenend the life of the valve springs.. and stressed some other internals, however if it breaks in the future thats when you deal with those issues.. i assure you, you will know in no uncertain terms if you bend a pushrod.. one other thing and probably the only true concern for me would be the timing chain.. how many miles on the car? those are not the most reliable in the world at higher RPMs especially in a radical engine speed change higher then normal acceleration forces exerted upon it.. but again when they break there is absolutely no mistaking somthing is wrong.. may have given it a nice hardy stretch though!! i would start a wish list for go fast parts and when its time, go ahead and have everything ready to put in.. nothing like planning ahead for the future!!
i have beat the holy hell out of a 100k mile 1990 L98 for the past year, shifts at 5800-6000 quite often, even had a idiot friend who couldn't shift peg the needle against the plastic before...which is? what ??? rpm the engine held togeather for almost 2yrs with that kind of milage before it went south..time to rebuild it with stronger stuff
