Default Service Engine Soon indicator?

While driving my stock 85 automatic yesterday the"Service Engine Soon" came up on the display panal. Engine has been completly serviced and all fluid levels are correct. Question: What sensors or condition would trigger this condition? By the way, shut engine off and restarted the indicator did not come back on.
Thanks, JW

Any of the sensors can set a code if they fail. Many sensors can detect situations that result in more than one code. Going from memory, there are roughly 75 different fault codes on an '85.

You need to pull the codes. Search is your friend.

I'll bet you find a code 32. EGR system problem.

If you're lucky it's the EGR temperature switch. Also could be EGR solenoid, vacuum lines or EGR valve.

You have the classic symptom: SES while driving, gone after restart.
