In the past I've used Castrol Synthetic 5-50Wt oil without any issues. It gave me better oil pressure readings at operating temps then Mobile 1 and less engine noise. I had been recommended this oil from Castrol for the Vette. I have been running this in all my cars for over 15 years without oil issues (except HHR Turbo). That said, I know it is not the recommended Wt rating for our cars.
What oil do you use and comments on the Castrol Syntec and Edge products and 5-50Wt are requested.
Based off the other threads, just any oil you can buy you like. It makes no difference and its usually a personal as many here will say.
How many engines failed due to oil, ?
if your engine is a rebuild, ask your builder. If it is factory, use weight recommended meeting specs in users manual.
Really? So when will a REAL answer be posted? Sorry, new here and haven't had time yet to read all of your posts and learn from all your years of experience.. Try educating me on 5W-50w oil... So far, I haven't seen one of you respond to the original question... or was that going to be too taxing on your attention span? So which thread had that answer?
It's really a matter of preference... I run mobile 1 15w50 on all my cars ..including the vette....Never had an issue.... So I can't see any issue with 5w50..I would monitor oil temp and pressure if you have concerns... But I believe you would be Ok..

A 50 weight oil is WAAAYY too thick for these engines. The bearing clearances ate tighter and require a 30 weight oil. Using a 50 weight will increase friction and heat and too much operating pressure. I dont run anything more than 30 in my race car, anything street driven shouldn't need more either.
With roller cams I use Mobil 1. The IRL engine that won Phoenix some time ago driven by Pete Hamilton & built by friend Mickey Nickos had Mobil 1 15-50 in it. (Olds engine)
Flat tappet cars/bikes/impliments get Rotella T non synthetic. It still has some zinc in it.
I switched from Mobil 1 to AMS oil, Signature series last fall (0W30) and using there EA Filter for upto 25,000 mile interval oil change. I will probably pull a oil sample at about 12,000 miles to see what it is doing. I also changed the transmission and differential over to AMS oil synthetic at the same time. this is on a '93 LT1.
Changing whatever it is fairly often especially if you don't drive that often to get the condensation and resulting acids out is the biggest issue. For me if over 6 months old out it goes along with all the things chewing on bearings. Clean fresh oil wins everytime. All this 25k oil is interesting and possibly useful if the engine is warm most of the time above the boling point of water if not get it out of there. Personally I use Castrol GTX 20-50 dino oil and a quality filter every 6 months it's 20 bucks and 30 minutes seems like a no brainer. There are a million threads on any forum you might want to chose, pick the one you agree with. I pick oil weights by the local temperatures and minimum oil pressure and miles on the engine few will agree but personally could care less.

What is that for? I tried looking at it from different angles and squinting my eyes and I can't make it out...I don't see the naked lady or old man's face or whatever it is...
