Took my 96 LT4 in to have the back tires and wheels swapped. (previous owner had new tires installed and they had rear wheels going in wrong direction) After the sway this annoying light started coming on. Well, I searched the archieves and discovered the sensors are probably in the wrong location now. I need to know which color goes in which location. If someone could help me out I would appreciate it. I also here a rattle in the tire and think the sensor may be loose in there. In either case, I will have tire removed and checked for proper sensor location. Thanks for the help. :)
Actually, which wheel the sensor is on makes no difference. It is very common for the tire apes to destroy sensors when removing tires. I suspect this is what happened. You can pull the codes to tell which sensor (color) is bad, but I do not have the service manual for your year. That makes it a little easier to order the sensor and have it rather than having to remove the tire to figure out which color sensor you need.
Another way to do it is to:
1. Inflate all tire to at least 30 PSI.
2. Take the first tire and lower the air pressure to 20 psi
3. Take the car up to about 30 mph and the Low Tire Pressure should light (not the service LTPWS light)
4. If Low Tire Pressure comes on, that wheel is ok.
Bring pressure back to 30 PSI or more.
If Low TIre Pressure does not come on, that is your deffective sensor.
5. Repeat for all other wheels
These sensors are hard to come by and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Perhaps take the offending wheel back to the tire ape and have them pay for a new sensor. My last one cost me about $170 and I was fortunate to find it.
If it has the same sensors as the 92-95 ZR-1's a bad sensor or a removed sensor will set a code 99. Sometimes it takes a few miles to set the code. Most of the discount tire stores in my area won't touch wheels with LTPWS. Hell the Chevy dealer won't even touch them. Good luck
If you have a rattle and you've driven it any distance at speed 45+, I would say your sensor is not just loose but gone. The tire apes destroyed two of mine when I bought the last set of tires. At $170 for each sensor, they didn't make any money off of me even though I bought Pirelli P-Zeroes from them.
The biggest problem was the inconvenience. It two them two weeks to track down the sensors.
It's too bad you guys don't live in Toronto because I've done mine (all 4) without a problem at my Chevy Dealership. Mind you, I'm sure if I took two hours to do yours like I did on my car, the service manager would freak.
Too many dealerships care about quantity over quality however there are "some" good ones out there. :boxing
Also, if the sensors were never in the right position to begin with on the wheel, there is a much higher chance they'll get broken.
can you turn off the LTPWS with the chip??? mine are bad and I may just pull the DIC bulb, not worth the hassle or expense to restore this funky and high $$$ system.
anyone carry these things used at a reasonable price???
Thanks everyone for your help and insight. Sounds like it may be a broken sensor. I will take it in and have it looked at after I try the pressure test and determine which location is the problem.
Great advice from this forum is what makes a new owner like me proud to be a member. Will let you know the outcome. :)
