Recently, when the weather got hot (in Phoenix) I turned on my air conditioner. When the compressor cycled on, the idle dropped from 700 rpm to about 200 rpm. Finally, when the engine was hotter, it did stall. Several times.
I had the ECM checked out and found no problems. I replaced the O2 sensor as well as the Idle Air Control Valve. Although it seems a little better (it doesn't quite stall) the ECM doesn't seem to kick up the RPM's enough (or change the fuel/air mixture) to keep the rpm's at a reasonable level.
I did take a shop cloth and try to clean it as best I could. I am taking the car to a local shop this afternoon that has a brand new analyzer. I'll have them reset the idle at 450 rpm.
One odd thing about my car (I bought it 2 years ago) is that when the car comes to a stop, say at a stop sign or light, the engine idle stays up around 1000 for 3-4 seconds and then cycles down to 700. I had an 85 and it never did this.
I think I sent the reply to your message to my own posting. Just to make sure you see the reply, I did clean out the bore with a cloth as best I could, but I didn't reset the idle to 450. I'm going to a local shop this afternoon and have them run a new analyzer on the car they just got yesterday. I can have them reset the idle then.
I also mentioned that since I bought my 88, when I approach a stop sign or light the idle remains at about 1000 for 3-4 seconds when I come to a complete stop. It then idles down to 700-800 rpm. If I don't come to a complete stop it stays at 1000 rpms. My older 85 didn't do that.
