I notice that my 88 with auto transmission has a slow downshift when in OD going to 3rd if I'm going up a hill, or if I lightly hit the accelerator to adjust my speed just a little. It makes a noise like... The best way to describe it is if you have ever driven a manual tranmission, and push the accelerator hard at highest gear, but don't downshift.
If I push the accelerator more aggressively, I can force it to downshift.
Transmission shifts fine under normal or even hard acceleration.
You could benefit from an increase in pump pressure. It's a pretty simple modification and GREATLY extends the life of your transmission. That said, it sounds like your clutches are burned (see previous sentence...). You didn't mention your odometer reading, but I think your trans needs a rebuild. I suggest taking it to a trans shop (or two) and having it evaluated.
Thanks guys. Fluid level is fine. I'll do some reading in my FSM on the TV cable so I can see if it is properly set. At 127,000 I wouldn't be surprised if a rebuild is in my near future.
try un hookingg the conector on the trns for the lock up then drive it if it run smoother hook it back up either get a lock switch that rasies the tcc apply speed or have a computer chip installed the lock up converter engages at a low speed causing the symptoms your describing
I have same exact symptoms. Shifting up is ideal, smooth, in time, but shifting down, especially from 4th is late/slow and car makes low pitch noise unless I press gas pedal quick to force downshift. TV cable adjusted. Any ideas? 118k mileage
EDIT: I just checked TV cable adjustment and I have weird case. I press D button and move slider manually to the right (towards firewall). It goes back fully. I then release D button and move throttle lever to max open position. Nothing happens to the slider... (see enclosed movie). What can be wrong here?
