Default auxiliary cooling fan thermostatic switch

I have a '88 model with heavy duty cooling. My research indicates the primary
fan is controlled by the ECM with inputs from the coolant temperature sensor located under the thermostat ,and the A/C fan control switch. It appears to be operating as designed. The auxiliary fan, reportedly controlled by a thermostatic switch located in the driver's side cylinder head, appears to be activated at a very high temperature. At what temp should this switch be turning on the auxiliary fan? I am concerned at the current activation temp. Thanks- Joe Platt

I believe it is 229* or if the A/C is on. For the car to run between 200 and 230 is normal. I ran an aftermarket switch through the fins of the radiator to run mine on an 84 and with some other work got the car to run between 189 and 211.

The main fan comes on at 228F and the aux fan turns on at 238F.

Water boils at 212 at sea level if not under pressure.....whereas in our vettes with a 15-16 lb. pressure cap, the boiling point with some anitfreeze is actually about 262 degress. My '88 gets to 230 sitting in traffic, then the fan kicks on and it drops immediately to 210. As soon as I start moving at around 35 mph it's all back to normal around 195-200. But, with my a/c on it never goes higher than 215 even when just stopped in traffic. I can live with all of it.
Good luck,

Corrections:

Damn. I just can't believe those numbers. Water boils at 212*F, therefore at coolant temperatures exceeding that you're just asking for a hose to burst from the pressure. Replacing the hoses under the AC unit is difficult. Damn GM engineers don't know what it is they are doing.
