Hey everyone. I have a 96 coupe auto and was looking in changing my rear gears. I'm thinking about either the 3.45 or 3.73. I was going to buy the gears and have my mechanic put them in but the labor is going to be a lot. What do you think about this differential for sale. I have a stock LT1 and was wondering if it would be less costly to just buy the whole differential to put in with the 3.31 gears. How big of a difference do the 3.31 gears as opposed to the 3.45 and 3.73? Thanks in advance, Ed. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/3058043817.html

If I'm reading the ad correctly the rear end for sale has 3.07 gears currently but includes a 3.31 ring and pinion. To get the 3.31 ratio you will still have to pay labor to replace the gears plus any needed bearings and parts once it is disassembled. If you are willing to settle for the 3.07 ratio it might cost less, but if you want something closer to 3.5 you might as well pay to have gears installed in your differential.
First, that is a lot of money to pay for an used Dana 36 rear. Second, it won't get you anything because you would still have to pay someone to install the 3.31's. Just take the rear to a good performance oriented gear shop and have him install 3.54 ot 3.73 gears, it will cost you less in the long run and you will have what you want.
I disagree, that is a good price for a low milage D36 with 3:07's. What are you using the car for, track or street. The 3:07 is a great all around performance gear. I put a 3:07 pumpkin in mine for the autocross season and am very happy with it.
With that kind of miles the price probably isn't too far out of line. That being said, D36s are a plentiful so I'd probably try to low ball him a bit and see if he comes down some.
