I have an 87 with 41K all stock but the wheels. It starts fine but when I get 1 or 2 miles from my house it stalls and wont start. The engine turns over but it will not start. If I let it sit for 30 minutes or so it starts right up????
When it won't start is the time for you to look for the reason. Does it have spark? Does it have fuel pressure? Are the injectors being pulsed? Is the spark at the right time?
It has the symptom of a fuel pump. Indeed put a FP gauge on the schraeder valve to catch it next time. Also listen when you turn the key On to see if you can hear the fuel pump run for 2sec.
If the pump you could pull the assembly and clean the three contacts in the harness just under the mounting flange. These corrode with time and can produce the symptom of a failed fuel pump.
Here's something else to consider--because it happened to me with my '87 coupe. The EGR valve was beginning to stick so after driving awhile, it would remain open when I came to a stop. Net result--stalling. I couldn't get it to start up and remain running until the car has rested for about 5-10 minutes. I found out about this problem when I took it in for a smog check.
You can check this by using a pair of pliers and pulling up on the pintle of the EGR valve while at idle. The car will stumble and when you release the pliers, it should recover almost immediately if the EGR valve is working properly.
As the other folks said, you should also check fuel pressure and spark. Definitely pull your spark plugs to see if the deposits look normal.
