Glue removal?
I bought a set of 95/96 style fender gills that I am going to put on my 91. My problem is that they had plastic strips glued to them. After I pried them off I was unable to get the glue off. I have tried 3M trim adhesive remover, goof off, alcohol and paint thinner. The stuff that is on there is very sticky and kinda ***** and clumps up.
I thought that they might have been glued on with super glue so I used what we use in my clinic when someone glues their body parts together with the stuff - neosporin. That did not cut it either.
I sold the strips on Ebay as I did not like the look. Would it harm the SMC to use acetone or lacquer thinner?
Any other advice?
Here is what they looked like when I got them:
I doubt lacquer thinner will get it off but you can give it a try.... They have a rubber wheel that goes on the end of a drill that's made just to remove the glue left behind when removing moldings (it's like a large eraser)
Or you can do it the old fashion way soak a rag with lacquer thinner and lay it on top of the glue and try rubbing it off
Naptha is very good at removing adhesives. Shouldn't damage your paint, but you would want to test it first before going crazy. I've used it on various parts interior and exterior with great results.
Disclaimer: It's flammable, so stay away from open flames (ie including water heater, etc.). Wear gloves, a respirator and in a place with good airflow. In California may cause cancer. Be sure to read the label for all precautions.
This is neither a suggestion nor endorsement for the use of Naptha. Use at your own peril.
hands down best and safest is made by 3M; not typically found at any but the most complete hardware stores, here; perhaps at those that cater to professionals. It works fantastically on weatherstrip and many other glues w/o harming the paint.
