I have a vary bad sound coming from what I beleave to be my right side half shaft, sounds like the u- joint. how much of a pain is it to change and do any of you have any tricks to get it done faster and easyer?
It's not too hard of a task. I went straight off of the shop manual and Haynes, and it was a piece of cake. No special tools, no real problems. A vice comes in real handy, but that is about it. You could probably do one side start to finish in 4 hours. Good luck!
The is a wealth of information in the Tech Tips tab. Just select "Tech Tips", than "C4 Related Tech Tips" , and then "Universal Joint Removal and Installation". I'm doing this on my car right now.
Thanks for the info I just did one side ( about an 1.5 hours give or take 15min.) it really is not bad... now I will look in the tech tips to see how they say to do it...
Well I just looked at it... I was close I don't know what way would be easyer.. I did not remove any of the things they say to remove.. i removed the lower control arm bolt by the wheel and the two front control arms and this made it so i could get the shaft out and I did not have to try to get things set back to where they were.. good luck to anyone that has to do this..
BUY QUALITY U JOINTS !!!!!!!!! the oe spicer is really hard to beat, buy from GM !! or at least go to a good driveline shop and chat some. changing is easy, remove the two control arms that hook into the chassis, un bolt the spring on the side your changing. loosen sway bar mounts so there's play. with a floor jack and a little skill you can get the half shaft out. press in new u joints and your set. also BUY QUALITY U JOINTS>!!!! no mid america stuff..they DO NOT LAST>!!!!!!
