Default Engine situation. 1985

Hi All:

The probem was when I bought the car last year. Started up in a split second. Great. Drove it for 20 minutes or so and parked it for a couple of minutes. Came out and it would turn over for about 10 seconds before it started. Okay, I could live with that.

This year, (today actually), I noticed that it is blowing white smoke on start up. Not sure if it is doing it while its driving cuz its such a new issue to me.

Do you think the two might be related?

Thanks

1) White smoke.....start it up and then get out and watch the tail pipes. Does it still smoke after a few minutes or does it go away. My guess is that it goes away.
2) If it goes away, you need new valve seals. It is not too difficult of a job. You will either need a compressor with a fitting to screw into the spark plug hole to hold up the valves or use the rope trick.
3) Use Fel-Pro intake seals for all the valves including the exhaust valves.

4) Longer start. You need to test the fuel pressure. I am guessing that when you turn the key, it is pressurizing up to about 36-39 PSI and then in seconds dropping to zero. This would indicate a had check valve in the fuel pump. The pump replacement is easier than the seals...about a 1/2 hour job.

Let us know what you find.

Longer start: maybe your cold start injector is not working. Check the cold start thermal switch on the front of the intake manifold (same connector as injectors) and the wiring. There is a splice in the wiring between the cold start thermal switch and the cold start injector that may have a problem.

The cold start injector only works while the engine is cranking so it's difficult to measure voltages. The thermal part cuts off after 8 seconds. It does not work if the coolant temperature is above 95 degrees F.

Not related, however, both are probably the result of the car sitting for long periods of time.

If the white smoke has a tinge of blue in it, its oil and its an indication of a bad valve seal. I have that in my 85 after I let it sit for more than a week. If I drive it regularly, the problem doesn't return.

The hard start is another issue and can be linked back to many things. If the car is hard to start after its warm, then I would look to a leaking injector. Its a common problem. The injector is staying open allowing the fuel to escape into the intake. Do you get any dark smoke once it starts or a rich smelling exhaust?
