I have a 95 corvette that I bought back about a year ago with 39,000 miles. Last december I was driving down the interstate and my 3rd gear went out. I drove the car home and look around for a transmission repair shop. Cottman transmission was offered to me with high praises. So I drop the car off for a week and they decided to put in a transgo shift kit along with a higher stall torque converter. I got the car back, two months later same problem.. driving down the interstate when my 3rd gear goes out again. Drop my car off for two weeks this time they said they put in some performance springs and blah blah blah.. I get the car back the next day I'm going up the interstate when my 3rd gear goes out again... on the drive back to the shop my 2nd gear goes out as well.. They take the shop for another 3 weeks telling me there putting in new solenoids and higher pressure pumps or somethin.. replacing a cracked drum... i get the car back and it lasts 4 days... this time the tranny was un drivable, wouldn't hit any gears.. Cottman tows my car back and has now had it another 4 weeks telling me next friday it might be ready? They told me that the new drum they replaced broke due to an incredible amount of torque??? My car only has exhaust on it.. theres no way that driveline is putting out that much torque. Any suggestions? Only thing I'm currently looking at is the better business bureau? Thanx for your input.
My '95 needed a tranny when I bought it. After doing a lot of price checking, I decided to get the GM Goodwrench tranny with a 3 yr/50,000 mile warranty. They are built in a factory, even dyno tested. Very pleased with it. They do put in all the improved parts when they build it, such as the '96 torque converter. To have that much trouble at your low mileage I think you have a bad one, and the shop has no clue but if you keep paying them they will keep trying.
I had a 99 Bravada (I know a little off topic, but wait) that had a 4L60E trans it as well and it blew out 2nd, OD, and reverse at 30,000 miles. Luckily it was still under warranty... I noticed that from the start it shifted in and out of OD when backing off and then giving it gas and I think that was the symptom of a bad trans. Subsequently (after rebuild by the dealer) it still did the same thing and I recall a similar description (parts wise) of what blew by the dealer who rebuilt it. Ultimately I traded it in on a new Bravada because I knew the next time it went it would be on my nickel. I think you have a lemon trans like I did and I would definitely recommend a wholesale swap to a new one. You might want to check with GM to see if they might be sympathetic to the cause (couldn't hurt, right?) and offer something monetarily. But I definitely think there may have been some bad transmissions right from the factory (tolerance issues?)
I payed almost 3 thousand for a rebuild transmission with a lifetime warranty... which is why i keep bringing it back to this shop. I think the next stop for it is GM along with a bill sent to cottman transmission.
