To adjust the linkage, remove the cotter pin and loosen the adjusting nut on the shift lever attached to the transmission under the driver's door. Manually move the lever forward (to park). Move the console lever to park. Tighten the nut, replace the cotter pin and drive away.
The way I adjusted mine was to put the shifter in Park, remove the shift cable at the transmission with the transmission in Park and move the pin in the shift lever until I could slip the cable end over the pin. The pin is held in place with a 15mm nut on the back of the shift lever. This is the guy you're working with (shift cable not present -- you can see the adjusting slot for the pin.):
Thanks for the pic Cliff Harris. Just fixed mine the other day and i love having first gear again! now i can rev it out more and grab second. Before I was only shifting at 4,600rpms from second to third. Kinda weak. I have quite a few mods i like to take advantage of.
When I did mine it was in park and jacked up supported safely, didnt take out the small keeper pin just loosened the nut on the back side of the cable PIN/rod. Then I had someone get into the car and i told them to hold the shifter in park so it wouldn't move when i tightened the linkage. didn't work that good it still moved so i had him put it in first and then i tightened the nut cause it wants to go in gear when tightening the bolt. Had him cycle through all the gears and i counted clicks while i was down there and it fixed it. The weird thing is that once i snugged it back up again it didn't look like i had moved it that much on the linkage from where it was? But everything works good now cycles through all gears good. I didn't tighten that hard but i trust its not going to go loose any time soon. Be careful it doesn't need a lot but you don't want to get under neath it again, if you don't need to.
