Hi. I am trying to save an 87 yellow corvette convertible. Had the valves redone and mechanic said the rest of the engine is in good shape. Waiting to do the paint job with Sikken's paint.

The call ran good until I have the value job. Now I get valve clatter. Mechanic said it was ok .. use higher octane gas. I use premium. Part of problem is previous owner put in high performance engine. Probably caused higher combustion pressure and therefore pre ignition. But the car clatters whenever it is put under pressure, like going up hill.

I replaced ECR value. Any other suggestions.?

Sorry, need to clarify. The previous owner put in "high performance pistons". Head gasket was leaking and eventually blew. I had new values, push rods, and lifters put in. They are hydraulic lifters.

I use 93 octane and sometimes use Lucas gas treatment and/or octane booster. That helps.

Greetings and welcome!!!!

My friend you are likely burning holes in your pistons.

You say the motor is High Performance? What does that mean?

If higher compression you need to find 100 octane fuel and see what that does for you.

Sunoco sells it some places Bp as well.

Fill out your personal info and we may be able to tell you where?

For all we know your in Brazil?

Thank you for reply. I clarified my original post. I am near Austin,
TX. The 87 Vette has high performance pistons. I am now sure if the cam was changed. I use 93 octane and sometime use either Lucas gas treatment or an octane booster. That seems to help. The timing mark is off (balancer slipped?) I have had the mechanic tune the car and set timing, but that makes it pre-ignition worse

Need to get the Harmonic balancer changed if you suspect it's bad.

Detonation from timing or octane issues will destroy a motor

Be sure you have the right type plug as well.
