Default Solid Roller Cam vs Knock Sensor

...... Any concerns or tricks to using a solid roller cam with a knock sensor installed ? I'm getting ready to fire the bad boy up and was just pondering what affect the valve clearance would have on piezo crystals ...........

Your solid lifters and increased valvetrain noise will be picked up by the knock sensor and retard the timing. You need to find a way to desensitize the sensor or tune them out.

What kind engine do you have, LT1, LT4, or L98? What computer system are you using stock, aftermarket?

I have a solid roller in my engine and have been able to sucessfully run the stock L98 (1985) knock sensor with the Holley Commander 950 ECU. It took me a while to get the setting figured out, got some advise from Tom Wong, now it works just fine. I am running an 11 to 1 compression solid roller set up on 92 octance and it works well.

Good luck,

Brian

383vette is right, that would be the best way. The cheap way would be to relocate them to a cushy rubber mount on the chassis somewhere, but then you loose any protection that they could have given you....."and this, boys and girls, is how NOT to do it"

You'll probably need a tune anyways, so it shouldn't be any trouble for the tuner to adjust for the solid valvetrain. But I think you'll need to bring the car to the tuner, not a pre-tuned ecm.

.......... Its an L98 ... or it used to be ... running the factory 165 computer and tuning myself with the help of Mr. Moates' amazing gadgetry ... I didn't want to lose the protection factor altogether ... I just don't want to be tuning for retarded timing ... as if there aren't already enough variables to deal with ...........

I'm running an Accel DFI on my bracket car. When I was first tuning the car, I used the knock sensor. If the thing picked up any knock, real or not, it would retard timing 14 degrees and not clear up until the end of the run. It would also run a tenth off the dial. I eliminated the knock sensor and run an safe tune (don't need killer times to bracket race) and now have a super consistant car.

I don't have a solid roller, but I do have a blower.

I have a dash mounted casper knock gage (need buick g/n ignition module) that is showing me what the kncok sensors are doing at all times. Despite it being for a buick, it correlates w/ actual knock from datascans.

Let's me know if a knock retard event (false or real) is occurring.

I agree with you on the moates ostrich. Amazing stuff. Almost makes a dfi a waste of money.
