Default Power Steering Reservoir Cap Question !!

I somehow lost my Power Steering Reservoir Cap, and need to replace it. I have been able to track down a GM cap that looks similar (i'm in Australia so I can't go to a Corvette dealer) . The question is simply, can i do damage by installing the wrong cap. Is it's only fuction to stop fluid spilling out or is the system pressurised ??
Thanks
Steve

I am assuming that your vette is a 1990. As long as the replacement cap is sufficent to keep the oil from sloshing out, you should be fine. Also, you don't want a cap that is sealed. THe cap has to be vented to allow the fluid to expand. The more important thing is to keep the fluid level from dropping too low. IF you post a WTB ad in the C4 parts section, you might find someone who can get you one cheap. I am not sure how they would get it to you.

That's a ~$15 (US) (at GMPartsDirect) part for an '86 (remote reservoir)...

I don't know specific postal rates, but I wouldn't think it would cost more than that to have it mailed...

The only problem here is the currency exchange...It's not likely you have any US greenbacks, and banks here charge horrendous rates to process checks or money orders...It'd be better for you (if you needed parts) to order direct from someone like Jeff Kopp and pay by credit card and let credit card company eat the exchange charges...

I've ordered some computer parts from Oz, and have worked it this way. Much easier, if there is no local parts supplier...

BTW: I replaced my ps pump earlier this year, and ran it at idle extensively before & after, with cap off. There is no reason to maintain a pressure seal. If you could just rubber-band a baggie around the reservoir for a while, it shouldn't hurt it.

Please be advised that you can purchase parts from GM using the internet. I found the following web site that is useful in determining part numbers and cost: http://www.gm-restorationparts.com/e...mer/entry.asp. They will take your credit card and ship it to you. I do not know the cost to ship things "down under", but you can check it out. If you are like me, I like to keep my "garage queen" with original parts....if possible. Regards, Sam

Thanks Guys,
I was just looking for an easy option
I regularly get parts shipped across in fact i just ordered a new soft top. To give you an example of what it cost to get it here !!
Soft top plus bow rubber US $250 (Aus $550)
Freight ( I asked for it to be sent surface, but it was sent air) $195 (Aus $410)
Duty $135 (Aus)
So a US $250 order cost me over $1000 Australian.
Thats why i was looking for a cap locally !!
Thanks
Steve
