Wiper Motor Woes
I've got a 1990 L98 that has a failed wiper motor and it appears that I have freak and need to confirm it with you folks. I went ahead and ordered a remanufactured AC Delco wiper motor from Rock Auto, and then got the old motor out of the car. I start going to back together with it and I can't get the dust boot/grease seal back over the output shaft of the new motor, fiddled with it for while and it would not go on. I put the two motors side by side and found the the problem, they were not the same thing. The old motor had a machined dowel pin (this pin locates the grease seal/dust cover and keeps it from spinning, or so it appears) located in it's own little drilled boss approximately half way between outer edge of the machined flat (surrounding the output shaft) and the shaft itself. It measures 3 mm high when measured from the machined surface. The new one has a locating dowel that is made from stamped steel, is located at the outer edge of the flat and is 6 mm tall.
I have given the VIN to Rock Auto, GM Parts House and to the local Chevy dealer, and Rock Auto did send the right P/N. There is a number that is on the side of the old motor, but the sticker is torn and the P/N is incomplete. Not only that, but none of the numbers match up with any of the P/N that everyone is telling me that it could be. The easy fix is to get new dust cover/grease seal to fit the new motor, but the parts manuals aren't even showing that piece and there appears to be no P/N for it. It is possible that the wiper motor in my car is not the original, maybe it broke and the mechanics adapted something else to fit it; I have no idea. Has anybody else ever run into this? I've thought about doing a pocket knife modification and finish off with a little RTV, but would rather do this the right way if I could. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Best,
APN
