Went to a 4th of July parade today with my '86 Coupe. On the way home I stopped at a friend's place for a few minutes. Turned the key - no start, not even a click. All the lights worked. Borrowed a socket wrench from the friend and took off the negative terminal. Rubbed the surfaces a little with my fingers and put it back on. Turned the key and it started just fine.
This Spring, I cleaned both terminals good. I am puzzled as to why corrosion could form so quickly after only two months.
I posted this just so you can check this if you have a no start condition for no apparent reason.
did that the first time my 91 didn't click. it was the key, didn't read for unknown reasons. it resets in 4 mins, so by the time I unhooked terminal, it was ready.
next time look for a steady SECURITY light when you turn key to run. if you have it, remove key and wait for 4 mins. unless you noticed obvious corrosion. my terminals were clean.
Some years ago when I had trouble with the ignition not reading the code on the key, I installed a bypass to eliminate the problem. I tend to think it was still a battery connection corrosion problem. I had waited well over 4 minutes after trying to start it today.
The early VATS system does not have a connection to the security light. Later GM moved the VATS function from a separate module to inside the ECM and those are the ones that tell you there is a VATS problem by lighting the security light.

Later models ('90+ ) have the VATS incorporated in the CCM ; not the ECM.
All the ECM /PCM ever has is a fuel enable signal requirement from VATS in order for it to fire the injectors

thanks. this is why I normally stick to the 91 year models when I get involved. too many differences in years. besides, he has the vats bypass.
I've never experienced where wiping a visably clean terminal solved a problem but is possible. if the connection is made to the solenoid when cranked, but battery weak, lights should dim or go out, relays click, etc.
