Also when I replace it, is a crossover better as far as performance is concerned?

I'm pretty sure the stock size is 2 1/4" diameter. I've heard the rear y-pipe with the crossover built in cuts down on interior resonance, but I doubt it does much for performance. I think going to 2 1/2" front and rear y-pipes would give you a better performance gain. I'll let you know next week when I have mine installed.

It goes from 3" at the rear of the convertor to 2.25" into each muffler.

Where can I find a 2.5in rear Y? The ones I have seen are 2.25in. Do I have to have one made? The ones I saw in the forum mall are "86-90 Factory-style Y-pipe, rear, w/factory heat shields" ZIP-EX-432-SC" and "86-91 Crossover tube Y-pipe, O/S" ZIP-EX-479-SC" but I don't know the diameter of these.

Borla makes a 2.5" rear Y-Pipe for the L98 in stainless steel.
