My L98 Vette idles at about 625 and it is not a smooth idle. When I run the AC, the idle is much better (with more RPM). Would some of you please advise me of the idle speed of your car (withour AC on)? I have spent a fortune replacing parts to improve the idle. It seems that 625 RPM is a bit slow for a V8! Thanks in advance for your comments.
Actually, that's about where my '88 idles too. I don't think that's too slow!!
With my a/c on, the ECM compensates for the extra load and increases the idle speed slightly to still maintain at 650-750 rpm range. You may have a glich somewhere else?
Hope you can track it down. :)
My 89 roadster idles at 600 rpm in or out of drive, I have a little bit of the idle roughness but it isn't enough to worry about if the motor quits at an idle then you have a problem.

My 89 runs about 675-700 in drive or park. With the A/C on, it is the same. you might want to check the IAC and TPS to ensure that they are both within spec.

Thanks for your comments as I did not have a reference for my idle RPM problem. Now I feel normal!!! My next step is to go to Craig Moates software and hook up my garage quees to my laptop and see what I can learn.
My '89 6-speed idles at 900 RPM when (really) cold, drops to 800 RPM when the temperature hits about 50C degrees, then rests at a very steady (and smooth) 700 RPM from about 75C degrees on up.
With the A/C on, the idle tends to fluctuate a bit. Assuming that the car is warm and idling normally at 700 RPM, when the compressor's clutch engages, the idle rises to about 800 RPM, jumps to 900 RPM when the clutch disengages, then drops back down to 700 RPM. I originally found this kind of strange, but I've been told that it's normal for a manual transmission car; automatic transmission equipped cars compensate for this better (although I have no first-hand proof of this).
But the bottom line is, my car never drops below 700 RPM. If it does, I know there's something wrong...
