I am in the process of putting my motor (LT4) back together and realized that I may not have organized my parts as good as I should have. Each roller lifter has a hole on only one side, oil hole I presume. For each pair of lifters, should this hole point away from the pair or should the holes point towards each other? Maybe it doesn't matter, I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
Good question, I posted a similar question when I was reassembling, might try a search I think it was back in January, but pretty much got the same response as above, the oil holes are not oriented and I couldn't see a pattern while removing them. I did hear that you should keep the the lifters, pushrods and rockers all paired together since they establish a wear pattern.
There is a major difference. Roller lifters are paired and have a cross bar that goes between them to keep the rollers properly aligned on the camshaft.
Standard hydraulic (or solid) lifters tends to rotate while on the camshaft, so where you drop the oil hole doesn't really matter. As stated above, the groove allows oil to enter the lifter regardless of oil hole orientation.
And ..... Oh yes, you should keep all valve components paired up with the respective valve because the parts do develop wear patterns ~ including the tops vs. the bottom end of each pushrod.
I wondered the same thing when I did mine this winter. I checked them when I removed them and there did not seem to be a pattern. I assume the engine was stock when I pulled the intake.
So I called a mechanic friend and he told me it didn't matter becasue the holes are in a grove that goes all the way around the lifter. Make sense to me.
Thanks guys for the responses. I knew you would come through. And yes, I did keep all parts paired and oriented to appropriate cylinder when I removed them. I just didn't notice the location of the oil holes when I dissasembled.
