Is there a rev limiter or a fuel shutoff that kicks in if you over rev a LT1. I was running a Porsche Boxter Saturday afternoon and right before I grabbed second gear I heard a pop. It dosen`t seem to have hurt anything as the car still runs fine. Kinda scared me for an instant and my brother who was behind me in his ford said he saw a puff of black smoke. Any thoughts?
Stock your '95 would find its rev limiter at ~ 5,700 to 5,800 rpm. The factory rev limiter shuts off fuel rather than ignition, so in an acceleration mode your engine will actually rev higher than the rev limiter until the fuel rails empty out. Although you can easily reprogram your computer for a higher rev limit (I set mine at 6,700), you will need valvetrain improvements before you should rev it higher. Also, your '95 LT1 is pretty much off its power curve after ~ 5,800 rpm, your power will drop off pretty sharply after that, which means you will be accelerating slower if you spend much rev time above 5,800 rpm.
I don`t think I was there long enough to drain the fuel rails as this all happened real quick. I`m still trying to figure out what caused that pop and the black puff out of the exhaust.
At WOT the fuel rails drain very quickly and usually no more than ~ 200 rpm increase will be observed before shutdown. Black puff of smoke, you mean like the nitrous cars when they go rich? If your O2 sensors are old or damaged your computer will get feedback indicating a lean condition, so it will want to pump more fuel, which you don't actually need, and there we get your black puff.
