Default HOT CAM Springs...why TRASH?

I just read thru quite a few HOT CAM topics posted here and noticed that more than a few recommended tossing out the Springs that come w/ the HOT CAM...why is this?

Is the lift too high? How about for a more "moderate" .500" lift?

Thanks,

Dr. ('95 LT1/4L60E in a '76 - Under Construction!)

i have no idea other than the fact they are a single spring, .525 is about there limit however. if you float them more than a few times i couldn't imagine them lasting long when they are at max as it is. i have a zz4 cam & bought the hot springs, they are cheap and should hold up to .510 lift just fine. a .550 spring with a damper, like the kind TPIS sells for the zz9 cam are definatly more reliable if you abuse the vavle train or just in general i supose..they just cost 4x what the GM springs do...

If your going with a high lift cam, look into comp cams 981 series springs, but remeber, DO NOT over spring your cam, you will eat your valvetrain via too much resistance on the lifters, valves on a cam with below .500 inch lift on a .550 spring.
