Recently melted down the distributor in my L98 during a Pro Solo event. EGR Pipe blowing hot on the distributor. Replaced the distributor and associate vacum lines behind it. Car runs well at next event, a little warm sitting in the pits, really not that unusual.
Take car in for new wheel lugs, oil change some water wetter. Pick it up runs fine about ten mintues, gets up to operating temp, has no power. Two wires are arching. Replace wires, repeat test and result. Getting revs according to my tach, no power, engine temps rising. No lights, but gauge much higher than normal. Replace all wires and plugs, still runs like crap?
Any ideas? Timing too advanced, what? OEM distributor, AC Delco wires, and plugs. As factory orginal right now as you can get.
I'd look hard at the ICM and the wires inside and around the dizzy...they get pinched and the ICM cooks if its not set in a puddle of silicone grease.
Next do some simple EGR test...get a vac line to the EGR and apply vac as the engine runs. ANY difference? if not, the egr is stuck open. IF there IS some difference when you apply vac then its probably closing as it should when it should, but you still need to be sure of the solenoid AND the time/thermal switch on the EGR pipe (if your yr has one).
Anyone know the name and location of the shop that specializes in L98s in So Cal. Believe it goes by the handle MJacks? Not sure, but apparently a legend with teh L98.
Unless you'r in a hurry try to find the problem and repair it yourself because if you'r a racer there is a little saying. Race it, break it, fix it and repeat.
