My 90 vert has a 6 speed with 33000 miles. I think its time to change the fluid.I have read a lot of post on the forum as far as miles and time to change the fluid. Im thinking BMW oil may be the best. Does anyone have a picture of the plug that has to be removed? or will I see it when I get under the car. The dealer here in town wants 137.00 to change transmission fluid. I dont like giving them money but from reading I need to buy a pump and oil so it may be worth it. Im not in a hurry but can you guys give me some idea of witch way to go
I have not used BMW oil
Pennzoil Syncromesh can be had at Pep Boys. The pump that screws on the bottle can be had at the auto parts store for $5.
Get 3 qts youll use a touch over 2 if memory serves right
Youll see the drain plug
MAke sure you can get the fill plug out first they stick a little.
Easy job
You'll need a 17mm hex wrench to get the plug out. I did mine last winter using Amsoil...great product bought from a vendor on this forum. If you have the car jacked up you may as well do the rear end while your under there.
I've used Red Line MTL with very good results.
You'll need a 17mm Hex wrench to remove the plug - I was able to get mine at Sears. As others have said remove the fill plug on the side of the tranny first then remove the drain plug at the bottom. Even when torqued properly - those plugs can be tight - you might want to find a 12" - 18" long piece of pipe to fit over the hex key...
There are a number of ways to refill the tranny - the pump option is probably the best one if you're working alone. If you'll have a friend or two around - a flexible hose can be used to feed the fluid down from the top of the car to the fill port.
It's not a hard job, but count on spilling some trans fluid when refilling (read that as wear old cloths and put something down to protect the floor.)
Thanks a lot guys, That seems easy I may do it this weekend. Now do you use the same oil in the rear end? Someone posted while under the car change the oil in the rear aswell. I think our napa has amsoil.
What about purple syncromesh transmission oil. thats what our in town napa has in stock. Little more money 17.50 a quart.
I'm guessing you mean Royal Purple and in the Royal Purple Guide the recommended usage for a GM 1052931 replacement is HPS 10W30. Just search the original part number!
More than happy to get AMSOIL products for forum members at dealer wholesale pricing, about 25% below retail, via the AMSOIL Preferred Customer Program. Drop me a PM if interested.
It sounds like you've made the decision to use the "synthetic" that is most frequently used. I've a good bit of the OE 1052931 still BUT lubricants have changed dramatically in the past 20+ years, maybe it's time to investigate. The HPS 10W30 and a reasonable service interval I believe would have been a good move.
In most later model transmissions, transfer cases, final drives and differentials I do believe it's maybe more important to "pay attention" to lubricants and avoid substitutions!
its not unusual to find the drain plug somewhat buggered up; if time is of the essence, you might want to have a new one on hand before starting this project; I got a replacement from ZF doc; it wasn't expensive.
