Well, I shreded a serp belt this weekend :cry but what surprised me is that NOBODY in Bowling Green KY had a belt for a '92! What is the difference you ask? Well, for the 92 model year (and only 92) the belt has ribs on both sides!
Now for the question: can the idler tensioner pully and the power steering pully be replaced with smooth pullys (currently, they are the ones that have ribs on them forcing the double sided belt)??? That way, I won't have to hunt all around the US trying to find this specific belt.
Why would you go through all of this hassle considering the price of a belt? I doubt you will go through one every 5 years, and if you do so more often, just buy 2 the first time, then order a replacement when you use one of them. The cost to do so will be considerably less than the conversion.

The early 93s have the same belt. As far reason to change the belt is cheaper, and if you throw a belt in a town that can not find the harder to find belt. I have changed belts twice in the 4 years I've owned my car. However my car also went 66,000 miles in that time. One belt was thrown for no obvious reason  I looked into changing pulleys but wasn't planning on changing this last time. I think you have to change the tensioner and PS pulley but not 100% sure. I would have to look at my car again. Everything in the swap is a direct conversion belt is the same length, and pulleys in the same location from what I understand.
I have the smooth belt installed for the past year with no problems. I ordered the correct one and this came in. I figured I'd see if it would work before exchanging it. Local GM vette mechanic said it would be fine.
I went through the same thing with my 92 recently. I was going to go to the local parts store and buy a belt, and everyone looked at me funny when I brought the double sided serpentine belt in the store. They said that they hadn't ever seen one. They looked it up in their books and said that it was a dealer item only, so I went and ordered one from the local Chevy dealer and ordered one to get me by. I finally decided to modify my pulley setup to a single sided belt like the 93-up Vettes. I went to the local Oreilly Auto Parts store and bought the idler, and tensioner pulleys (without the ribs) , and installed them. The only other thing that I had to do is pull the power steering pump off, and put the pulley in the lathe and turn the ribs off of the pulley.( you can either buy a pulley for a 93-up or you can do this). The 93-up pulleys are steel instead of plastic. I haven't had any problems at all with the new setup. :yesnod:

Yeah, that's what I have running on it now. I have the double sided belt behind the seat just in case. I don't want to go through changing the belt because there isn't much room up there any more (camber brace installed). It doesn't look like it is wearing badly at the moment. I am prepared if (and when) it does break though. Thanks everyone for your input! :yesnod:
You can update the tensioner and power steering pulley to the late '93-96 style with no problems. When I still had my '92 I went through about 4 belts in 30k miles. I think the total cost of the parts including GM belt was about $120.

Re: Pully questions for a '92
Why not just buy two belts at the same time and keep a spare around all the time? They are cheap through Jeff, I think I only paid like $15-$20 for it from him.
