i repaired a few things on my 84 steering colum. upon putting everything back together i attached the steering wheel tool to compress the locking plate. i then noticed the upper shaft simply slides out. so basically the tool just pulls the shaft out. i noticed there is a rod going down the center of the shaft.
so my question is.. .....how do i lock the steering wheel shaft so i can use the tool to put the locking plate back on? The wheel is telescoping so I'm thinking it has something to do with that. I don't wasn't to break anything but i was thinking maybe the rod in the center of the shaft has to be forced down or something.
thanks in advance.
I just did a tilt column for a jeep but it did not have telescope so your right that may be it. It still should stay in a locked position tho I would think. Did you do anything to the telescope part that may allow for this movement? I dont really understand how this would happen as the tools I have screw onto the shaft and then the lock plate is depressed by the u shape part that is pushed down by the wingnut on the shaft that attached to the column shaft. You might PM Agent86, he can put you on the right track.
I am having trouble visualizing what you are doing. I just had my steering wheel off of my 1986 about a month ago. I put everything back together then put the steering wheel on. I then tightened up the bolt and it all worked out.
I figured it out. Basically the star screw pushes down on the rod in the center of the shaft. Once tightened enough the shaft becomes locked (telescoping) so my problem was the compress tool could not go over the star screw. And without the screw locking the shaft I could not use the tool. So what I did was go down to ace hardware and bought a 5/16 screw with a really small Alan head that I knew the compress tool could fit over. I locked the upper shaft tightening the new screw and was able to use the compress tool without a problem.
