My battery keeps dying. I buy a new one and it dies too. I disconnected the security system, didn't help. Anyone have any ideas on what could be hot causing the battery to die?
That was my idea this weekend, I didn't want to spend an hour pulling one out at a time! I thought maybe there is a common issue. I should be looking for something that is drawing high amps? Like more than 5 I guess?
I was having problems with my '88 draining the battery over several days of standing. Finally I noticed that the clock stayed illuminated, indicating a problem in the radio. After pulling the CLK/CTSY fuse the clock was not illuminated and the battery held power.
Turns out that with the radio connected and CLK/CTSY fuse installed draw was 0.28 A, w/o radio the draw was only 0.02 A. So the radio is on the bench and I'm trying to locate the problem.
The most common problems that cause extra current drain are: power seats and power antenna. Sometimes they get stuck in a weird mode where they don't shut off when they're supposed to. I think a headlight could do this also.
You could have a wire pinched somewhere or a wire with worn insulation.
The ECM and the C68 air conditioner control head have power on them all the time to maintain the RAM. The ECM keeps the error codes and BLM values and the A/C control head remembers your settings.
I've run down the battery by keeping the door open too long while working on my car. I replaced all the interior lamps with LEDs and that problem has gone away.
