Did you check the fluid level when the car was warm and running?

In addition to fluid level, check for fluid color and smell. The fluid should be a nice light red / pink color, and it should not have an acrid Burned smell to it.

Aside from fluid level, I suppose it's possible that the filter is partially clogged....partcularly if the shift quality has been pretty poor as of late (read mushy shifts).

GOOD LUCK

Hey Purple92 The level has been checked thats ok,i have had no problem with the shifting,it just went all at once,i will have the mechanic check the filter to see if its plugged. Are their any relays that operate the tranny,I remember reading in the manual something about transmission relays. Thank You Wayne

The only relay or solenoid in the 700r4 is the lock up solenoid which shouldn't have anything to do with you losing 3rd and 4th gear. Everything else is hydraulically operated.

The 700R4 uses an electronically controlled lock up in 4th, but that would not explain your problem with 3rd. Hate to say it - but the problem is probably in internal failure.

Removing a tranny on a C4 (manual or auto) isn't a lot of fun, but aside from pulling the "C-Beam" (aka torque arm) the job isn't really that terribly difficult. Depending on your level of mechanical ability - you might want to consider pulling the gearbox yourself and taking it to a trans shop for rebuilding (or puting in a "trans-in-the-box). Talk to some reputible shops in your area, and check with some of the mail order builders to get an idea of prices. Warning - very few reputible shops will give a hard and fast price until they open the box up and see what (if any) "hard parts" need replacement. (Hard parts are things that are typically reusable - things that are not included in a trans rebuild kit).

I have toasted mine twice in five years , but after many upgrades.
You will need to rebuild it.-

84 used a 700r4 this is a hydralic trans non elec. solinoid shift as in a 4l60e. if you lost 3-4 you have more then likely fried the clutch pak. if fluid was low or filter plugged you would notice a problem in 1-2 also. you may have got lucky(if the fluid is not burn't) you could have a shift valve in the valve body stuck.a good trans shop can determine this pretty easy. if your a serious gear head you can repair this yourself.but excuse me,sorry but if you were you probably wouldn't have posted this question. a good trans shop can help you out. didn't mean any dis-respect. sorry good luck
