My 92 Corvette has had the metal piece (skid plate) that wraps around the bottom of the leading edge of the passenger's footwell fall off. This piece wraps around the leading edge and is attached to the fiberglass footwell tub. Does anyone know the accurate name for this part or have a part number for it so that I can locate a replacement? I did a search on Ebay for a used one with no success. I would like to get it replaced as the insulation that it holds back is dropping down out of the opening.
Has anyone replaced one of these before, and if so in what manner did you reattach it? The corvette is used as a daily driver and several autocross events a year, so the desire here is to just do a functional repair rather than something of a restoration level.
I would agree that there shouldn't be an opening. The metal plate was a loose when I bought the car and then I noticed it missing after running any autocross event when I got the car home. I believe it got knocked off while running when the car bottomed out somewhere as there were lots of ups and downs in the course. Just looking for options to address repairing it.
Regardless of where it came off the car, I need to find one if at all possible and replace it. Worst case I do have some heat shield blanket that I will find a way to attach. Would like to address better if I can.
Not sure what the part number is, but you could try calling the guys at "Corvette Recycling" I've had good luck with them identifying wierd parts in the past and their prices are decent.
Worst case you could always just bend a new one from stainless sheet and rivit it back on.
Many years ago I ran over a piece of angle iron on the freeway at 70 MPH. It tore several holes in the floorboards. I patched the holes with fiberglass matt and polyester resin. The hot trick for doing this is to tape plastic wrap to the bottom (the resin won't stick to it). Then I used cardboard and lots of masking tape on the bottom to hold everything together and repaired the holes from the top.
After I made the repairs I realized that my FEET were right there. I think the transmission pan deflected the angle iron.
Since I happen to have the carpet out of my car right now, you get to see what one of the repaired areas looks like:

Just last weekend I was under my 85 cleaning the underbody after I pulled the transmission. I found a glob of bondo and a mangled shield on the passenger side floorboard. After removing both, I ended up with a hole in the fiberglass the size of my fist. I repaired the hole with fiberglass resin and cloth and straightened the shield.
I'm not sure how one just falls off. There's 5 rivets holding it on. If I was you, I would pick up a piece of sheetmetal, form it to the curve and rivet it on. These are NOT skid plates.
