85WhiteZ51 and I are rebuilding my AC and we have everything apart. We took the orifice tube (filter) out and can not find a way to put the new one in (without feeling like we are going to break it). Any suggestions on how to put the new one back in? It was a pain to take out, had to pull hard for it to come out. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (85WHITEZ51)
Make sure it matches the one removed. You may be trying to install it upside down. There should be an arrow and it is installed with the arrow pointing down. Make sure to put some oil on the o-ring. Should slip right in.
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (SunCr)
Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like the clamp that holds the orifice tube slightly pinched the tube and made the opening a tad smaller than it should be. Finally got it tapped/pushed in this morning. Thanks again.
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (VetteNoob)
Opps - that's not good. You don't want any further restriction other than what the o-tube provides. If need be, NAPA sells a repair kit. You cut off the Evaporator inlet and then bolt on the replacement which is sealed with a compression fitting. Hopefully you can get by without it as using it is just another potential source for a leak (though it certainly beats replacing an Evaporator).
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (SunCr)
I think it should be ok for this go around. If I ever need to change the orifice tube filter again, I may have to go that route. Now all I need to do is have a vacuum pulled for about an hour to make sure everything sealed.
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (VetteNoob)
Just remembered: If you're using the GM/AC Delco Universal Accumulator replacement with the dual service ports, you need to notch or cut down the bracket around the second port so that it fits. Otherwise it sticks up too far and hits the hood.
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (SunCr)
Weird. I didnt have that problem with the GM Universal dryer. Jeff from Superior Chevy said that this was the part designed for the 86 Vette. Hood shuts fine without hitting anything.
On a side note. We yanked off all the EGR crap (diverter valve, pipes) The engine compartment looks SO much cleaner now. No code so far after a 40 mile drive to work. Looks like a pump eliminator is next. :D
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (VetteNoob)
Cool. Must be an issue with the Nippendenso Units and you have an R4. Just watch out for missing paint above the Accumulator after a few drives and that it doesn't wiggle around in the bracket. Also, if you plug the acdelco part# in to the link at http://www.acdelco.com you will note that the same Drier is the service replacement for some OLDS, Buicks & Pontiacs. To my knowledge, GM no longer makes the Vette Drier with the single lowside service port and the Drier that's offered is used on other models where the low pressure switch is mounted at the Drier as opposed to the Evaporator, the setup on the Vette.

Man, I think both of us were just tired and spaced last night when we got to the filter. It took me about 15 minutes to push the darned thing in, but it went. Now all thats left to be done is the vacuum and filling the thing. WOOHOO! Thanks again for helping me out with everything. Would have been a 2 day project if I had to do it by myself. GF goes out of town for a week sometime soon if you need any help putting yours back together.
Re: URGENT!!! Need help. AC rebuild in progress (VetteNoob)
If you don't mind going to round rock to help that would be cool. I think I will put it back together in a couple of weeks as I wont have the injectors back this weekend and I am moving on the 8th. But the weekend after that is when I am going to do the job. You are more than welcome to come and help.
