Getting ready to change the oil and want to know what is recommeded for a 94 LT1. I did a search but didn't see anything. Only has 61k on it. My first corvette. Are there any gotchas on this. Aythig difficult to get to that would warrant taking to a shop?
Also I am smelling coolant. I took it to a supposed expert shop to look for a leak and they found none and I have seen no leaking. So why do I smell it so much after its been running for awhile. Overflow? sitting in traffic the temp will get up to about 235.
the books will offer a range of wts to use that has a window of the normal operating temps for your area...its going to be somewhere between 5-30 and 10-40.....I doubt it ranges as high as 15-50wt.
If you are in an avg climate then I'd say 5-30wt. It should be on a door sticker. Buy your FSM and never wonder what the right thing is, ever again. The FSM will tell you.
I use 10-40 in summer, was running 15-50wt in Phx where the low was 100+ for 4 mts at a time...Now I run 5-30wt in my L98 and do fine in a hot Gulf coast climate. Not nearly as miserable as Phx though...
If you smell coolant then its leaking coolant. Thats an unmistakable oder...
Drive with the vent changing from max hot to max cold and see if that makes it worse. Might be the heater core.
Check the fill bottle daily for a while to see if thats where its leaking or over flowing. A bad rad cap can let hot coolant run into the bottle where it leaks out or over flows.
Keep an eye on it so you don't get a real problem. Your 235 temp is traffic is normal. Again, if you smell it, then it IS leaking somewhere...never ignore your gut instincts.
Also if the hoses are the originals, they can seep allowing the smell but not able to see it leak. Also when you first get ready to drive it, while its cold, POP the filler cap and check the level. Do this for a few days and if you see a drop you know its going somewhere. One other thing is the coolant through the throttle body could also be the culprit
The assumptions you are making and your comments make you look like a jackass but then again every forum no matter the content has a few so congrats on your position. This is a used car I got in a trade that has been rebuilt so I do not have an owners manual or a Factory Service Manual. And I do not have a big flippin Mobil 1 plate under the hood. The cap says to refer to the owers manual but there you go I do not have one. So I asked here.

It is VERY clearly spelled out in the owner's manual, the Factory Service Manual, the big flippin' MOBIL 1 plate under the hood, and the oil fill cap.
Mobil 1 5W30 is the spec. 10W40 will work fine, as will 10W30, 15W50, or even 0W40 depending on how you use the car.
Btw...yes, the Opti may fail if you wash the front of the engine and the coolant should be changed on occasion.

The cap on my '94 says 5w30...so does the Mobil1 plate under the hood. We humbly apologize if your vehicle is bereft of either.
Don't be so quick to strike out at those trying to help you and grow a thicker skin. 96GS#007 is very knowledgeable on C4s and the LT1/LT4 engines, and anytime a subject about 'oil', 'antifreeze' or 'spark plugs' comes up it generates a lot of, shall we say, "interest".
If you did a "search" you obviously left out Google...
I am a member of several musician sites where I have some credibility so I understand some of the noob questions get tedious at times but I always try to remember that these people are new to whatever they are doing and probably feel a little overwelmed so I try to be as helpful as I can and bite my tongue. It irks me when I feel someone gives a smartass answer because I don't feel like thats what these boards were intended for imo. I am sure 96 is very knowledgeable. I just prefer a little less sarcasm while I am trying to get up to speed.
Thanks Mark for the link. I didn't realize there was a online one although being a Vette and the info out there I shoud have known. When I said I did a search I meant only on this sight so I did not do an internet search. I thought it would be ok to ask here being that this is......well a Corvette site.
5w-30 as people have mentioned above will be fine as a general rule of thumb.
People are generally very helpful here on this forum. Anyone who says "use the search function", without actually contributing to the thread should read the sticky: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...questions.html
"Use the search" or "Have you tried using the search function??" are not helpful responses to other members requests for assistance. This is especially true for new members. Everyone was new once and while it can be tiring to respond to the same questions time and time again it is just as simple to post a link to the sticky threads at the top of the page as it is to post a smart reply. If you don't want to offer help then it is probably best that you respond to another thread where your vast knowledge and expertise is put to better use.
"The Forum should be a place where we treat one another with civility so that it remains a fun and friendly place to hang around with other Corvette enthusiasts. Hostility to others is rude and inappropriate."
Thank you for your anticipated cooperation going forward.
With that said, people may still answer questions while suggesting use of the search function lol

...and name calling on your part will get you a lot of help.
I believe there were at least 4 oil threads in the past week or so alone. Hundreds over the last couple of years, and thousands on the internet in general.
A quick Google Search for "1994 Corvette Oil" generated 2.17M links. I'll bet that one of them mentions 5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil as the factory fill. I'll bet there are others that talk about the benefits (or not) of Red Line, Amsoil, Royal Purple, and other oils. However rather than do 5 minutes of homework, you'd rather we do it for you. Then you whine and name call when someone chides you for asking a question that has been beaten to death time and again.
Btw....on Youtube there are even videos that will show you how to change the oil
LOL 96 I have to give you credit. You are very consistant and skilled at your job! Damn me for asking a question on a Vette site regarding a Vette. WOW. I had already got my answer. You choose to post sarcasm when it would have been much easier for you to say nothing. Or maybe post it where you dont come off like a snob. And to get technical I did not call you a name. I said it made you look like one but I never called you one.
