my wife was driving the '84 yesterday and it had to be boosted when she came out of the restaurant, took it to Firestone (a block away) they installed a new battery and it would not idle below 2 to 23 K...it was late yesterday at closing time so had to leave inside shop...any ideas what to look for? Vac line?
I tried the search/advance search option, couldn't find anything, hard to believe this hasn't been discussed...and if so I couldn't find it..
Best Regards;
Gary

Vacume leak would be one guess. Another would be if they couldn't figure out at first how to remove the battery and screwed around with trying to relocate the cruise controll directly above the battery they could have screwed it up.
Well I went back today and they said they let the car run for a bit to let the ECM learn again, something about the battery going dead and putting the new one on....not sure but it idles ok now...any ideas?

While it is true the ecm does have to relearn your driving habits it shouldn't effect your idle. Imho I think they were mesing around before they finally realized how to get the battery out. I'm sure it was nothing major and as long as they corrected the problem no harm no foul.
Would you be so kind to explain this to me? Could they have reset it? I've read that it can be cleaned. Also, what would cause it to do this?

Yea..seems to be ok now except according to the electrical test I need to replace the alternator since the output is at 11.980 under load and they suggested I replace and don't drive or the battery would die again...???

I have had my battery disconnected numerous times and never had a problem with the iac or any form of high idle upon start up. The alternator should have an output of just above 14 volts so that 11+ volts your getting is low.
I ordered a alternator from NAPA should be in Saturday morning so I probably shouldn't drive to the Woodward Dream Cruise this weekend... sure don't want to break down in that traffic... I live on West side of Michigan and Dream Cruise on East side.... planned on leaving today at noon...ugh!!

So; your honest john firestone dealer put in a new battery, screwed up the cruise cable, left it set overnite,charged you for a new battery and install, and the alternator is junk,and now you have to replace that. sorry to say but sounds to me like you've been had,or your wife was. a dead or low battery will recharge once the original problem is corrected. where is this dealer so i can tell my wife never to go there.

Well not sure it was exactly like that, I had a problem the week before, the gauge went up to 18 plus volts with the red light on and was that way for a few miles then went down to 11 to 12 and then from 12 to 13 and was parked for a week...so I had some sort of problem that seem to go away, not so sure the battery was bad but they did have to boost it off for her to drive to firestone...so I think the alternator was having problems .... not sure about the cruise control, when I looked at the cruise/cables etc nothing binding and when I pushed the diaphragm, it moved the butter flies in CFI... not sure if the surge in volts could cause a major problem that would cause any of this or not??
I don't know if you had this problem or not, but I had my 84 high idle for a while until I found that the plastic, throttle cable retainer was not fully inserted into the metal bracket between the throttle bodies. This caused enough tension on the throttle cable to not let the butterflies close enough.
I have always had much better luck doing it this way, as apposed to using the forums search engine. h
