Air pump
What's an air pump?
Mechanic says my air pump is making noise and I can hear a soft whirring type sound in the engine area.

Re: Air pump (tikiltd)
It s on the drivers side of the engine bay by the alternator. If I am correct it is used to pump air into the exhaust to get everything up to temp. A-lot of people get rid of the air system myself included

Re: Air pump (Rob90)
That is where it's at but I think it's really for making sure there's enough O2 in the exhaust to make CO2 instead of CO.

Re: Air pump (tikiltd)
That noise is normal for the pump. I should last only for a few minutes untill the engine warms up.

might as well just get rid of it, put a pulley in or gut it

It can't be replaced by a pulley, it's electrical. You can disconnect it though, it's only active at startup.

Re: Air pump (Kizmo)
It works in open loop to divert air via the exhaust manifolds to the cats to get them up to temp. quicker. It runs for a max of 4 minutes or until the system goes into closed loop. Hopes this helps.
