Default CRAP!!! Marked the dist. wrong before pulling it out.

Now what? How do I get it back in correctly? I was thinking that I could turn the engine manually untill the timing mark on the harmonic balancer lines up with the 6 degree mark on the timing tab. Then install the dist. with the rotor in the position where it would fire the number one piston. Will this work? Which stroke do I need to go to? I was thinking the compresion strike. Please help me out.

I feel like a complete idiot. :bb

It's on an 85.

You need to be at the top dead center of the compression stroke. This is the firing position. Once you get there, you can rotor on the dist pointing in the direction of the correct plug wire terminal.

Take a sparkplug out of #1 and turn the engine over by hand while keeping a finger on the plug hole. When you feel the compression force you know you are coming up to the firing position. Then watch the mark on the balancer and do as you thought.

You bet. When you feel the pressure, rotate the balancer to top dead center and drop your dist. in with the rotor pointing at #1.

Yeah you can.. and it will get hot too as it compresses. I like to set my #1 on top dead center. When you drop the dist in I point the rotor at the #1 cylinder. Then when I put the cap on I have the #1 spot there as well.

Another little trick is to make sure that number one is top dead center, then set your timing on the tab to what you want it to be at an idle, put the disto in. Then turn on the key and turn the disto, when you hear it click you have set the timming at the amount shown on the timming tab.
Used to set up a blower car this way, keeps from having to take the blower off each time you back fire

Just remember the dist will likely NOT drop in completely on first try. You may have to use a long shank flat blade screwdriver to align the slot in the oil pump with the dist shaft tang. Thats the real pita.
