Transmission lockout problem
Sometimes my transmission will lock me out of 1st and 2nd gear for no reason. It usually happens when coming off of the freeway after a 10 minute+ cruise in 6th gear. I have the 1to4 solinoid unplugged at the relay behind the battery. Any chance this could be something besides the solinoid? I dont see how it could be getting power to lock me out and why it would do it at a stop sitting at a red light. '91 L98 ZF 6 speed btw. Thanks for the help.

So it turns out that a clip fell off of a pin in my shifter. Lots of thanks to Bill the ZFdoc, his advice led me straight to the problem. In this diagram the clip (704) fell off of the axle (709) and, with vibration from driving in 5th and 6th gear, allowed the axle to slide out to the right of the cardon joint (708) enough to misalign and block the shifter from the 1-2 gate.
If this is happening to you and you can pull up and left on the shifter to get it into 1st gear check this pin, it should be tight on both sides with a clip on each end. I hope this helps someone.
