Thanks to everyone for past advise on my battery problem. Was the Alternator.
Now to a new issue. My radio has a hissing sound coming out of the speakers. I have been told it is the radio amp and to remove radio so it can be repaired. Then i have been told that the Delco (original stock radio) only has amps for each speaker.
Any help with this is appreciated.
I am located in NJ and have been trying to find someone that will work on this. The Chevy dealer won't touch it.
I have a 91 vert also. Determine if hissing is coming from all speakers or from a certain one. If from a certain one it probably is the amp at that speaker and is not hard to remove. If hissing is coming from all speakers it is probably the receiver I think it is located under the dash. For repair I have used Ecklers refurbishing service for my amps and have been satisfied. Hope this helps.
Unless you want to keep your vette completely stock, now is the time to replace the entire system with an aftermarket. I did some looking around before I got my new Alpine system and believe it or not, it was cheaper than fixing my 22 year old stereo!
Agree. Even if you can refurbed units its only a matter of time that another component will go wrong and its big bucks. The Delco Bose system has so many parts to it and so complex that it leaves little to be desired now. I am sure when new they were great but these days stereo technology has moved on that even an entry level will out class it for sound quality.
Sould like to keep it stock if possible. So there is an amp for each speaker?
The rear speakers seem ok, but not the front ones. Is the amp in the speaker itself, so changing out the speaker will resolve the issue??
Thank you AirForceOne. So I need to change the amplifiers. I haven't removed a speaker in the door as of yet. Are these amps part of the speaker assembly?
Do not buy new amplifiers. Doctor Don will rebuild them for much cheaper. The amplifiers are mounted with the speakers and they come off easily.
The 1991 has a radio head, which has the controls and the tape player and/or CD player. Under the dash is the receiver, which is the actual radio electronics. Then each speaker has its own amplifier. The problem is that now everything is old.
New CD players are much better and more resistant to skipping when driving over bumps. The speakers are old and dried out and do not give the best sound anymore. The electronics are very outdated.
When I had my 1991 I replaced the whole system with a new radio/CD player and 4 new speakers and was very happy with the improved sound.
The 1992 I currently have will soon have a new radio with CD and USB port in the front so a flash drive can be put on it with a zillion hours of your preferred music on it, and 4 new speakers. I am also adding sound deadener to the car to make it quieter at the same time so the music will sound even better.
Doing all of the above is not much more than having the CD player and the amplifiers on the old system repaired.
