I am referring to an entire hood with the scoop built in. i SHOULD HAVE CALLED IT A "COWL INDUCTION HOOD". I need to replace my hood and one parts dealer says all he has available is an "air induction hood". I am concerned about fit and visibility.

Greg

I have no way of gaugeing the quality of the fit and finnish of the hood your talking about but most hoods of that type have about a 2.75" bulge running part way down the center of the hood, thats not really going to effect your veiw of the road unless your extremely short in height, try this, put two phone books about 3" thick on your hood one in front of the other and get into the vette and see how much they block your vision, if you find it extremely anoying then I would not buy the hood but personally I love the way those hoods make the vette look, they seem to give that hood a (yeah thats right Im one bad high powered vette look) of course each person must judge for themselfs and I don,t find the slight loss in vision area at all a draw back!

grumpyvette,

I agree. They look really cool. I did hear from one member who said it was difficult to fit and adjust. I would think it would be great for cooling.

I've been doing alot of investigating in this area, my info is that the windshield (cowling) is a POOR place to expect much "wind activity". It's been said by a few pro's that if you were able to reach out and place a feather in that area at about 65 mph, that feather would stay motionless ? ? ? It's something to do with the angle of the windshield. One way to prove this out is to drive during a rain strom and observe the water ? ? It depends on what your ultimate goal is. Looks? Heat disapation? Ram air?

Good luck! Eddie in Arizona, currently building an '84 autocross killer-race only 520hp 500 fp torque, dana 44, 4:10 gear-set, steroided 700 etc, etc..

Eddie,

Thanks for the response. I really waasn't worried about the performance, though I think it would help cooling. I need to repalce my hood and the parts guy can't get me a stock hood. He only has cowl induction hoods for $1,695.00. I don't want to end up with a lot of work to fit and adjust this hood.

take another look at this hood http://www.c5west.com/dex.html
it can quite easily be made to fuction as a true ram air hood where the cowl induction hoods tale more work because of the severe rake/angle on the vettes windshield

I've been looking at doing the same thing. Vanacor's has some turbo hoods, but I have no idea as to quality and fit.

Man that's alot of $$$, i'd check with some of the salvage yards around the country like; JDCORVETTE.COM or CORVETTEPARTS.COM or GULFCOASTCORVETTE.COM or MICHIGANCORVETTE.COM , , , see what you get (in your year) then add the scoop of your choice. Just gotta be better then $17k............ Can't you use some (or most) of the hardware from your old hood ? ?

Eddie

Eddie,

Yeah, I can use all the old hardware. I like the looks of the hood, but I will probably go with a GM factory hood, if I can find one. I think I can get one from TLD for about $1,300.

:U :U :U Hood scoops are for f-body's and mustangs.

The vents like on the Calaway TT's are pretty nice though.

I had the Greenwood hood vent's installed on mine. I can tell you that they look great and do reduce underhood temps. Unfortunately the body shop installed them incorrectly, bonding them on to the hood and then painting them as one piece. Car is returning to the shop this Friday because the paint is cracking around the edges of the vents.

Greg, the type like I have on my car below or the actual slit vents in the front of the hood?

this type looks nice and is a bit tough to see over but its all worth it. The only place you have REAL problems is at the curb...its easy to nudge it into the curb and then you WILL have something to cuss about while having coffee at the diner...

one thought with this type of hood...and the seller of this car should have told me about it before I got out to MD to get the car...it had stress cracks around the turbo portion of the hood (raised part) that need to be fixed, be careful when you are closing your hood not to drop it toooooooo far or you will have em too.

I really like the look of stock hoods. It is clean and offers very little drag. However, when the clearance for a modified motor exists, a modified hood is in order. Some modified hoods look tacky and unwarranted. But to me, if you need it, gotta have it! However, nothing fits like the genuine pieces, so beware! Most hood scoops of 4 inches and less do not pose much in the way of visibility problems, unless of course you are Mini Me......

Friends,

Thank you for all your ideas. I started out looking for a stock hood, but couldn't find one. The guy I talked to had only cowl induction hoods. Then I heard that they don't fit very well and take a lot of work and adjusting to fit. I know that this can be hard enough with the stock hood. I have found two places where I can get a stock hood and that is what I will do.
