Default well engine is dead :(

937xx miles on her and she has a bad rod knock.. just showed up bleeding the breaks while changing the master cylinder. L98 in a 1990 corvette she ran soo good too, ran a 13.8 completely stock in the quarter and now that engine is toast... Was debating on fixing it and selling it or using this opportunity to upgrade her a little and keep it which is what i am leaning towards now!
SO i need to pull the engine, it seems what i have read is to pull the distributor and the tranny bolts are accessible that way and leave the accessories on the front. I will be using a stock replacement bottom end i think and was thinking of upgrading the cam(does need to be smog legal) and MAYBE buying a set of trickflow heads like on my camaro which are smog legal and run great! My biggest and MAIN problem is the tune, is there anyone that tunes or has chips for modifications like this?
The cam i want to keep mild and use the heads to help make the power i just want this thing to be low into the mid-high 12s and be very very reliable and able to pass smog if that is possible.. I will spend the money for the right parts too, most likely a forged bottom end(350 not 383 as it probably wont pass smog for some reason) i am terrified of smog... lol

Since this will be for the looooong haul(daily driven) i will also be putting a shift kit into the transmission. Something i thought would have surly went out before a small block 350... Who makes a shift kit that will make this thing last a while?

Thinking of buying the trickflow 175 heads to keep my bottom end, keeping the intake and runners stock and putting a small cam in it to pass
Anyone see a problem with getting lower than a 13.8 with all that?

I have just put an afr 195 set of heads on, xfi 268 comp cam, bbk throttle body, roller rockers and superam/accel intake plus long tube headers. The stock tune seems quite ok for normal driving. I have the datalogging/tuning equipment to play around with the tune going forward if I want to.

Please! Lol I would use the AFR 185 due to smog and a smaller smog legal cam and exhaust manifolds. I'm afraid with a combination of smog legal parts will make it dirty and most pass. It will have the cats and other smog stuff required on it but I just want it to come alive
I may just put the heads and the eddy intake on her and see how she runs

Rebuild it and enjoy it! Unless you're building a high HP engine, I'd skip the forged bottom end. Put the money you save toward better heads.

You'll definitely need to tune it since you have a SD car. You have a few options for tuning. You can buy your own equipment and learn to do it yourself. You can find someone local to tune it for you. Finally you can do a mail order tune. Mail order is least desirable, but it can work.

After my recent build, I used PCMforless for tuning. I gave them the details of my build and they sent me a basic tune to get me going. I
then bought the equipment to data-log my car. After data-logging I sent them them the files and they burned a pretty decent tune.

My build was pretty basic and was done on a budget (under 4k). It went high 11s on the first trip to the track. I'm guessing it will run mid 11s in the fall. You should easily be able to achieve your goals.
