Some days my '95 w/ automatic transmission wants to idle about 900rpm in gear stopped, higher out of gear, even when hot. Most other days (the norm for my car more or less) it idles around 600rpm in gear, at a stand still. On a fast idle day I can only bring the idle down by doing the Idle Air Control valve reset procedure:
1. depress gas pedal
2. turn key on (hear the IAC click into place)
3. start car and release gas pedal
4. Run for 5 seconds
5. shut off
6. wait 10 seconds
7. start normally.
Re: Sometimes it idles pretty fast... IAC? (Lone Ranger)
Very well could be. the spring might not be working properly. This can cause a lot of problems. Pick one up from whomever you can get it from cheapest...and let us know how it runs after.
Re: Sometimes it idles pretty fast... IAC? (JD 90 383)
about 31,000 now. Was sort of a garage queen when I got her... 27,641 miles in 7 years. I've put about 4K on her since February when I bought it.
I bet it is the IAC. Might explain why somedays (atmospheric conditions not withstanding) she seems friskier than others-- if the IAC is not setting up right wouldn't it also screw up the air/fuel mixture or at least cause the ECM to keep having to re-compute the mixture?
