Reg Dana 44 spool ( only ones available ) have to be machined to fit the C4 case .
Length is too long and diameter of the bearing lands are too big.

Also you have to instal grub screws into the spool to hold the axles in place because there is no place
to put the stock C clip axle retainers in

......... The half shafts will keep the axles in ...... if one of them cuts loose there are bigger worries than axles anyways .............. it looks as though I'll need to call George at the machine shop and see about getting one cut down ....... Thanks for the reply Mr. Rodj ... Corvette encyclopedian .....

How do you figure that? The axle IS the "upper control arm". What is going to hold the half shafts "in" so it can hold the axle stubs in?

..... My vette has a trailing arm suspension ... four link style ... no control arms ... the half shafts are fixed to provide a pivoting point for the toe and camber adjustments ... both of which help to keep the half shafts in their place ..... I suppose that under some extreme side load conditions a stub shaft could pull out of the diff housing if it wasn't held in by a snap ring but how far could it go ? ..........

I guess that I'm confused. Is your 'vettes rear suspension any different than what everyone else has? Mine has four trailing arms, no conventional upper control arms (the half shaft IS the upper arm) and I'm pretty sure that if the stub shaft wasn't anchored in MY car, it would fall out, and the wheel would "tip over" until the trailing arms bound up. What am I missing here?

........ You have never pulled a half shaft ... Try it next time you are under there ...... take the u-joint straps off on the diff end and push as hard as you can ... I mean leg it ... and see if you can move the joint off the yoke ....... the wheel is NOT going to tip over ..........

........... If there was ever any concern about side loads on the stub axles they would have been retained by something more substantial than a snap ring ........ compare it to a c-clip .........

I ran a spool and i had a hard time keeping the stub axles from moving in and out with the set screws that came with the spool , i had to upgrade them to a 3/8 bolt and notch the stub axles ...

Not using set screws will cause the stub axels to chew on the side of the dana housing , lose oil and beat up on the seal and also dirt getting into the housing . Driving around with street tires will be fine but once you put a slick on the car , the car will be un stable in top speed and really hard to control .. almost hit the wall few times because of it .

You will have about half inch play on each side if they are not pinned ..

......... Ahhhh , a testimonial .... awesome ... I am wrong ......... Where did you get the spool ? ........ in the dana carrier , the pin for the spider gears keeps the stub axles from going too far in and chewing up the seals and case ..... apparently it doesn't take much more than a snap ring to keep them from sliding out ............
