get the melling, most of the mods done to the moroso pump you can do to the melling pump yourself if you chose to plus theres no guarantee the moroso pick-up will work in your oil pan, its better that you do your own mods and custom fit your pan if necessary (its highly unlikely any mods at all will be necessary other than adding a high pressure spring if you choose too, and makeing sure the pickup is 1/2" of the bottom of the pan when the pan is installed(EXTREMELY IMPORTANT) and brazeing on the pickup to keep the pickup the correct distance from the pan bottom BTW "Moroso SB-Chevy, High Volume Race Pump w/Pickup Welded To Pump, 8.25'' Deep " for $96.
it won,t fit anyway your stock oil pan is about 7.3 inches deep now if your really interested in an upgrade ,you can have any good welding shop add two of these kits to your pan when its off and have an 8qt 7" deep oil pan on your vette for about $100 includeing welding costs(if they charge you about $40 like they did me to do it http://www.midwestmotorsportsinc.com/

We reused my pickup when we did the engine... get a new one? Also, how do you know how much the high pressure spring is going to raise the pressure?
standard springs bypass at about 60-65lbs, high pressure springs at about 70-75lbs, what that means is that thats the HIGHEST reading youll get not that youll get that reading at all unless the engine spins fast enough and your clearances are tight enough to reach that pressure level, the bypass spring pressure has no effect at all untill that level is reached,BTW MIDWEST also has right hand dip stick 7" deep 7qt oil pans available for about $90 but you will need to modify the front lower edge by cutting the front at a 45deg angle 1.4" wide and patching it (10 minute job at any good welding shop) to clear the vettes K-frame

Yep, but I just wanted to be sure it wasn't going to be like 200psi or something crazy. :)
Thanks a bunch grumpy. I think you've helped save my engine
I called my machine shop today and verified that the clearances are .003". They also recommended switching to 15w50 with those clearances.
My LT1 had those tolerances after the crank was polished and it had normal oil pressure. .002" is the upper limit for the first 4 bearings and .0032" for the back main bearings per factory manual.
The oil pump is driven by a part that bolts where the distributor went on the L98s. The body is plastic. If its worn or cracked, it could be the cause. The area where it goes in controls the distribution of oil to the engine. On older small blocks a miss installed distributor could block oil to the mains. I don't think that is an issue in your engine because the part can only be bolted in one way.
You really need to bit the bullet and pull the pan to check the main bearings. If you don't, you risk spinning rod bearings which means reconditioning the rod as well as the crank.
This must be a merricle or something, but ever since I fixed my idle, the pressure hasn't been down near as much. I've been seeing 50psi with any throttle and in gear idling with A/C on it's around 20psi  . I'm going to change oil today to 15w50 and see what that does. I still want to put in a high volume pump though. Just have to figure out when to do it. Probably when I remove my radiator for cleaning.
