I have loved corvettes all my life, and have been under the impression that the car is fiberglass. My father is telling me that his 92 coupe's rear end is rubber or vinyle or a combination of both. Does anyone know if the rear is fiberglass or is it some rubber compound? Is it polyurethane, and if so is polyurethane mostly rubber or plastic? Is there something I missed in the workmanship of a corvette???? Any help would be appreciated.
The front and rear bumper covers are urethane plastic. Corvette bumpers have always been either 1) Chromed steel 2) Urethane plastic. 3) A combination of steel and urethane.
You can buy aftermarket 'hard' fiberglass and 'semi-soft' flexi-glass replacements.
Yup, they designed the front and rear areas to be flexible and forgiving to slight impacts. GM began using these on the front of the 1973 Corvettes. And in 1974 the rears followed suit. That keeps repair costs to a minimum if you happen to get careless. Some have replaced these pieces with fiberglass ones because the flex pieces often warp after some time. Fiberglass is not as forgiving.
Your dad is indeed clever and intelligent. But you are even smarter because you know where to find the correct answer from the most informed Corvette group on the planet!
