Since it looks like I am going to be changing intakes on my car I am looking at upgrading the ECM to the newer version for better tuning purposes. I have tried the search in both Tech and scan & tune but found nothing. What I was looking for is a thread from a while back where someone listed very explicit instructions on repinning the '85 wiring to the newer ECM. He listed the procedure wire by wire, colors etc.
When I upgrade, will I be able to use my AutoXray 2000? Would i just enter the year make & model of the ECM to do a scan?
Actually I am surprised this is still available on the original server.(last updated '99 )
Many of the old links are now defunct
Would be nice if someone with the skills could extract it and repost it on here
I found the article I think you are looking for but it wasn't on the Forum. As I recall, I did a search on Google for "1227165 ECM upgrade" and the article came up. It was an upgrade done to an 85 Z28 Camaro.
you can use the extra pins from c12, d16, or c15 for your new d12 connection.
very simple and easy to do.
i also started with the arap bin
started right up first try
Thank you, this is the one I remember seeing. I have to be honest though, it scares the hell out of me. What about my scanner, will it still work the same?

i worked out each pin swap on paper a few times so i'd get it right.
i don't know about your scanner. i use tunerpro rt along with the autoprom.
i can tell you that i data logged with the 870 and the 165- big difference between getting data every second vs. many times a second.
i used a junkyard 165 computer that came with the prom.
i have since installed a remote chip socket to make chip swaps in literally 5 seconds.

This is just what I don't want to get into, making changes all the time. I don't race the car I just want it to be using all the hp it may have. I want to be able to have it tuned, install the chip & haul azz. I guess I will leave it up to whoever tunes it whether the ECM gets swapped or not.
Please don't think I don't appreciate your input, I do. I just don't want to be buying all the things it takes to do the changes. If I can't do it that way then I will leave the TPI on it & forget about it.
Just a for instance, I don't have a laptop nor do I want one. I wouldn't even know how to begin doing tuning with a laptop and I have no wish to learn. I guess I should stick to old school hot rodding.
Depending on what you want to spend there are also things like the Holley Avenger EFI system, which like most newer EFI systems has self-tuning built in and completely replaces your ECM for engine control. They sell TPI and main power harnesses which make the thing essentially plug-and-play. You can purchase a little hand-held controller so a laptop isn't necessary and just answer a few simple questions about your engine to get it going.
I've just started looking into getting their Dominator EFI system for my '87 which I'd use my laptop on, but the software in the box is identical to the software the Avenger and HP models use.

Mike, you can be sure I will be bugging you if it turns out I need any help, and I am grateful I can turn to you and the many others here. I thought I was just about done asking for help since my car is running so good but then the performance bug bit me again. I have found during my 50 some years of hot rodding that even with all the antibiotics I have had to take for various reasons, nothing will kill that darn bug.
Several years ago I had the bright idea of putting together some kits with instructions for this swap. Had a line on 165 ECMs for $20 a copy. Bypass surgery and new knees got in the way. Kinda wish I had taken another look.

dynamicefi is flash based. Creates new .bins at completion of datalog. Called VE Learn. No chips to lose connection in zif socket. Holds multiple .bins. Flash in a bin in a few seconds.
