O.K so the back story is; My 92 vert is garage kept and only summer driven, it has 58000 miles and no major problems until now.
Driving to my parent house a mile from mine, I pulled up to a stop sign and when I started to go it would not shift out of 1st gear (it's an automatic by the way). My first thought was transmission rite? when I started back home I noticed the speedo read 0 . No sys errors and when I back up it randomly jumps around from 2 to 4 to 16 and back to zero, just all over but only in reverse. I checked the plug on the VSS and I have check most the ground on the car earlier. Everything else is working, the ASR engages just like it should and the cables are fine along with the trans fluid.
I have ordered a set of shop manuals coming by the weekend.
Any ideas as to what it might be? The VSS, CCM or a connection problem. If it is the VSS, where do I get one and what is a good one? Everyone I have tried to call say it has been discontinued.
Please any help would be appreciated, only another month of cruising until she goes away for the winter.
I've had a similar problem recently. Mine works fine until I slow down to 15mph or so and then speed up to 30-35. During that time it will go from 0 to 30 and all over the place. Once I get up to 45 or so it works fine and it also works fine when I come to a complete stop and then accelerate. I have not spent any time or money trying to fix it since it only acts up a low speeds. My car is a '92 with the 700r4 and 3.73 gears. I had a LS3 Hot Cam (LS376/480 Hot Cam) installed 2 years ago and at that time the tranny was modified so it does not rely on either of the two computers to determine the shift points. However, this seems to be a C4 related problem, not one resulting from the build. I have communicated with one of the builders who is great with C4s and he is studying the problem. If he finds anything useful I will pass it on to all.
Yes the trans has been serviced but still has the original gears and VSS. Being a vert you have to remove the seats and cross member under the car before I can squeeze in and get to the VSS. unless there is an easier way to get to it.
You have got to be kidding me. I pulled the VSS and tested it with a drill and it is good. Reached in and pulled out the driven gear to find it warn. It is a 36 tooth white PN 25513043.
Product discontinued. WTF am I supposed to do with my vette now that I cannot drive it anymore? I have searched the net over and over, called GM, Called speedometer world and they may have them next year sometime. Really?
My brief research showed other GM models using that gear...get your Chevy dealer parts to put out a nationwide broadcast...perhaps try some local transmission shops, TCI or ATI, then move up to the Corvette recyclers.
I spoke to PATC and opted for the 37 tooth. It is only around a 1 mph off and it will do until I get the rite one in after the first of the year. I can keep the same VSS and drive gear as well. The difference in ratios is 36 tooth 2.1176 to 1 , 37 tooth 2.1764 with a difference of .058 to 1. At 100 mph it would be off 2.7mph , not bad.
